State Diabetes Council Recognizes HMOs

The Texas Diabetes Council has recognized six health maintenance organizations for providing above-average comprehensive diabetes care for their patients.

Great-West Healthcare, Dallas; HMO Blue Texas, Austin and Houston; Humana Health Plan of San Antonio; PacifiCare of Texas, San Antonio; Scott and White Health Plan, Central Texas; and Valley Baptist Health Plan, Harlingen, were recognized by the council.

This is the first year for the council's HMO Recognition Program awards.

Recognition was based on performance indicators in the 2004 Guide to Texas HMO Quality . The guide is published annually by the Texas Office of Public Insurance to assist employers and consumers in selecting HMO coverage and is online at: www.dshs.state.tx.us/thcic/publications/HMOs/HMOReports.shtm

The Texas Diabetes Council is appointed by the governor and works with private and public health care organizations to promote diabetes prevention and awareness.

The Texas Department of State Health Services provides administrative support for the council.
